MALATANG was filmed on location at Fortune No 1 restaurant in Monterey Park in February 2023.

This film was made for and by Chinese-American immigrants, and serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of our communities.

I pulled this story from my childhood of spending long hours loitering in the Burger King where my mother worked. It is my way of reimagining our experiences to understand her and the difficult decisions she had to make as a single parent.

I hope that immigrant mothers and their children can see themselves in this film and permit themselves to feel the messiness and beauty of wholeheartedly loving someone even as you fail them.
